Once the Libyan Revolution began in February 2011, the CIA began placing assets in the region, attempting to make contacts within the region. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, whose name and image would soon become synonymous with the Benghazi attacks, was the first liaison between the United States and the rebels. The task before the American intelligence community at that time was securing arms in the country, most notably shoulder-fired missiles, taken from the Libyan military.
Eastern Libya and Benghazi were the primary focal points of intelligence-gathering in the country. But there was something else at work here: The CIA was using the country as a base to funnel weapons to anti-Assad forces in Syria, as well as their alleged diplomatic mission.

The "Fuck the EU" call went viral, as an embarrassed State Department, never denying the call's authenticity, blamed the Russians for tapping the phone, much as the NSA has tapped the phones of European allies.
Despite outrage from German Chancellor Angela Merkel, no one fired Nuland, but her potty mouth upstaged the more serious story: the U.S. plot to overthrow Ukraine's elected government — and America's responsibility for a civil war that has killed at least 13,000 people and left Ukraine the poorest country in Europe.
In the process, Nuland, her husband Robert Kagan — co-founder of The Project for a New American Century — and their neocon cronies succeeded in sending U.S.-Russian relations into a dangerous downward spiral from which they have yet to recover.
When Ukrainian President Yanukovych spurned a U.S.-backed trade agreement with the European Union in favor of a $15 billion bailout from Russia, the State Department threw a tantrum.
Hell hath no fury like a superpower scorned.
The EU trade agreement was to open Ukraine's economy to European imports, but without a reciprocal opening of EU markets to Ukraine, it was a lopsided deal Yanukovich could not accept. The deal was approved by the post-coup government, and has only added to Ukraine's economic woes.
The muscle for Nuland's $5 billion coup was Oleh Tyahnybok's neo-Nazi Svoboda Party and the shadowy new Right Sector militia. During her leaked phone call, Nuland referred to Tyahnybok as one of the "big three" opposition leaders on the outside who could help the U.S.-backed Prime Minister Yatsenyuk on the inside. This is the same Tyanhnybok who once delivered a speech applauding Ukrainians for fighting Jews and "other scum" during World War II.
Nuland also wants to confront Russia with an aggressive NATO. Since her days as U.S. ambassador to NATO during President George W. Bush's second term, she has been a supporter of NATO's expansion all the way up to Russia's border. She calls for "permanent bases along NATO's eastern border." We have pored over a map of Europe, but we can't find a country called NATO with any borders at all. Nuland sees Russia's commitment to defending itself after successive 20th-century Western invasions as an intolerable obstacle to NATO's expansionist ambitions.

Chomsky: US Approach to Ukraine and Russia Has “Left the Domain of Rational Discourse”
The question of further expansion is more complex. The issue goes back over 30 years, to when the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was collapsing.
There were extensive negotiations among Russia, the U.S. and Germany. (The core issue was German unification.) Two visions were presented. Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev proposed a Eurasian security system from Lisbon to Vladivostok with no military blocs. The U.S. rejected it: NATO stays, Russia’s Warsaw Pact disappears.
For obvious reasons, German reunification within a hostile military alliance is no small matter for Russia. Nevertheless, Gorbachev agreed to it, with a quid pro quo: No expansion to the East. President George H.W. Bush and Secretary of State James Baker agreed. In their words to Gorbachev: “Not only for the Soviet Union but for other European countries as well, it is important to have guarantees that if the United States keeps its presence in Germany within the framework of NATO, not an inch of NATO’s present military jurisdiction will spread in an eastern direction.”
President H.W. Bush pretty much lived up to these commitments. So did President Bill Clinton at first, until 1999, the 50th anniversary of NATO; with an eye on the Polish vote in the upcoming election, some have speculated. He admitted Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic to NATO. President George W. Bush — the lovable goofy grandpa who was celebrated in the press on the 20th anniversary of his invasion of Afghanistan — let down all the bars. He brought in the Baltic states and others. In 2008, he invited Ukraine to join NATO, poking the bear in the eye. Ukraine is Russia’s geostrategic heartland, apart from intimate historic relations and a large Russia-oriented population. Germany and France vetoed Bush’s reckless invitation, but it’s still on the table. For months, The New York Times and other major U.S. news outlets have insisted that it’s just Russian propaganda to say that a significant neo-Nazi presence exists inside Ukraine, but thousands of these “non-existent” neo-Nazis battled police on Tuesday outside the parliament building in Kiev demanding recognition of their Hitler-collaborating forebears.
The parliament, aware of the obvious public relations fiasco that would follow if it bowed to far-right demands to honor members of the Nazi-affiliated Ukrainian Insurgent Army (or UIA), defeated the proposal. That touched off riots by an estimated 8,000 protesters led by Ukraine’s right-wing Svoboda party and the Right Sektor.
But this neo-Nazi reality continues to be an inconvenient truth about the U.S.-backed coup regime that seized power in Kiev with the overthrow of Yanukovych on Feb. 22. Several government ministries, including national security, were given to these far-right elements in recognition of their key role in the putsch that forced members of Yanukovych’s government to flee for their lives.
The larger historical context is that Nazism has been deeply rooted in western Ukraine since World War II, especially in cities like Lviv, where a cemetery to the veterans of the Galician SS, a Ukrainian affiliate of the Nazi SS, is maintained. These old passions were brought to the surface again in the battle to oust Yanukovych and sever historic ties to Russia.
The muscle behind the U.S.-backed Maidan protests against Yanukovych came from neo-Nazi militias trained in western Ukraine, organized into 100-man brigades and dispatched to Kiev. After the coup, neo-Nazi leader Andriy Parubiy, who was commander of the Maidan “self-defense forces,” was elevated to national security chief and soon announced that the Maidan militia forces would be incorporated into the National Guard and sent to eastern Ukraine to fight ethnic Russians resisting the coup regime.
The conservative London Daily Telegraph offered more details about the Azov battalion in an article by correspondent Tom Parfitt, who wrote: “Kiev’s use of volunteer paramilitaries to stamp out the Russian-backed Donetsk and Luhansk ‘people’s republics’ should send a shiver down Europe’s spine.
“Recently formed battalions such as Donbas, Dnipro and Azov, with several thousand men under their command, are officially under the control of the interior ministry but their financing is murky, their training inadequate and their ideology often alarming. The Azov men use the neo-Nazi Wolfsangel (Wolf’s Hook) symbol on their banner and members of the battalion are openly white supremacists, or anti-Semites.”
Based on interviews with militia members, the Telegraph reported that some of the fighters doubted the reality of the Holocaust, expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler and acknowledged that they are indeed Nazis.
Andriy Biletsky, the Azov commander, “is also head of an extremist Ukrainian group called the Social National Assembly,” according to the Telegraph article which quoted a commentary by Biletsky as declaring: “The historic mission of our nation in this critical moment is to lead the White Races of the world in a final crusade for their survival. A crusade against the Semite-led Untermenschen.”
In other words, for the first time since World War II, a government had dispatched Nazi storm troopers to attack a European population and officials in Kiev knew what they were doing. The Telegraph questioned Ukrainian authorities in Kiev who acknowledged that they were aware of the extremist ideologies of some militias but insisted that the higher priority was having troops who were strongly motivated to fight. How Not to Explain the Ukraine Crisis The PBS NewsHour invited on just about the worst person in the U.S. government to help Americans understand the crisis in Ukraine
Victoria Nuland, who choreographed the 2014 coup that overthrew Ukraine’s democratically-elected government and set the current crisis in motion, was invited by PBS NewsHour on Dec. 7 to explain the standoff in Ukraine.
Typical of Western media, the story began with Russia’s involvement in eastern Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea, which took place in March 2014. The crisis actually began a week earlier with the violent overthrow of democratically-elected President Viktor Yanukovych on Feb. 22, 2014. While accusations flew of Russian aggression, invasion and annexation, there was not a word about the U.S. instigated coup or Nuland’s role in it.
For the sin of declining a Western aid package loaded with austerity measures, and accepting instead an unencumbered Russian package, Yanukovych became a target for U.S. regime change. Undersecretary Nuland’s role in the coup is essential to the story.
While Senators John McCain and Chris Murphy appeared on-stage in Kiev with far-right opposition leader Oleh Tyahnybok in support of the coup, Nuland and Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt passed out cookies to anti-government protesters in Maidan Square. This would be like Russian parliamentarians and diplomats coming to Washington to encourage protesters to overthrow the U.S. government.
Behind the scenes, in an intercepted phone call with Pyatt, Nuland can be heard plotting the make-up of a government to succeed that of Yanukovych. “Yats is the guy” she said, referring to Arseniy Yatsenyuk, America’s preferred leader for the Ukrainian people. As for Europe’s competing interests in the outcome of the affair, she infamously said “Fuck the EU.”
Nuland had told the U.S.-Ukrainian Foundation on Dec. 13, 2013, that Washington had spent $5 billion over a decade to support Ukraine’s “European aspirations,” in other words to pull it away from Russia.
The Western media has also downplayed the 2014 US-supported coup of the democratically elected Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. The US wanted a leader of Ukraine to be someone who would want to join NATO. A mostly nonviolent protest of Ukrainians who wanted to join the EU began after Yanukovych rejected a bad EU economic aid offer in favor of a much better deal from Russia.

Charles Strange, the father of slain SEAL Michael Strange, told Savage that in June 2011, on at least three separate occasions his son grabbed him by the bicep and announced that he had prepared his will. The bewildered father finally was able to find out what it all meant. Michael Strange, his father recalled, said: “Something’s going on with the team. Somebody’s leaking things out. Something’s going on.” Michael Savage, reacting with emotion, asked: “Your son knew he was being sent to his death?” “They knew,” Strange replied. “They knew something was up. Every one of them.” Other families of the victims have reported similar experiences with their sons the last time they saw them, Strange said. Strange said documents related to the crash that he obtained show that, among other anomalies, the rescue team was held back. “This was all planned,” he said. “I have it in the paperwork.”

On September 11, 2012, a partially armed group of men stormed a US diplomatic outpost in the Libyan city of Benghazi. At the time, it was not clear who they were or why they'd attacked. But by the time the attack was over, four Americans, including US Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens, had been killed.
The attack ended by the early hours of September 12. But it has echoed in Washington ever since. The controversy has centered on Republican accusations that the Obama administration did not take heed of intelligence warnings before the attack, that during the attack it refused to call in available military support, and that after the attack it deliberately covered up what had happened.
Repeated independent investigations have disproven all of these allegations. But Republicans have continued to push them, insisting that these failures go all the way to the top, personally involving President Obama and then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. They've done so partly out political expediency — they think it's a great way to attack Clinton's presidential campaign — and partly out of a genuine belief that the administration is covering up the truth.
But regardless of the motivation, it's kind of paid off for Republicans: The House Select Committee on Benghazi, created by Speaker of the House John Boehner in 2014, found the first documented evidence that Clinton used unauthorized private email servers for State Department business, which became a major scandal. Unless Clinton is defeated in the Democratic primary, Benghazi will be around for the rest of the 2016 election — and if she wins, you'll likely be hearing about it for much longer.

Roadie NYC: it's utterly shocking to me how misunderstood tmrs the majority report I guess comments on Ukraine are. Every criticism I've seen has been about you guys not wanting to support Ukraine. news flash no one on TIME had come even close to saying that. quite the opposite. Also asking for transparency in open discussions on how the support will be used is perfectly reasonable. If anyone disagrees, that's fine. but that still doesn't mean the TMR was arguing against supporting Ukraine. These discussions are becoming exceedingly painful. when you guys make out TMR to be a brick wall for you to throw your frustrations at. We all need to start giving people that are obviously on our side the benefit of the doubt to make a solid effort to listen to what people say instead of what we feel they are saying. I mean I certainly feel like I have been accused of calling for defunding or sending the funds to Ukraine. and I don't feel like I've ever even come remotely close to that. I I was simply saying what is the plan. and I'm not. I don't want to get too deep into it again. People can go back and listen to my conversation with Ronald Raygyn who called in about this last week. but I think it is not just reasonable when we are funding a war for this country to articulate to have some public discussion on things like what's the end game? Where do we like, when do we stop? I know it's when Ukraine wins. What does that mean? Does it mean you know and do we stop when Ukraine says that they've won? You know, like China and Russia, every member of the Security Council signed off on a very limited project in Libya which was to stop Gaddafi from leveling Benghazi. Which he claimed he was about to do. and we superseded that. we not only ended up making it impossible in the future to inhibit an A or to have an international response to potential genocide by doing that. We also left Libya a crap show.

Sources and background for this story come mainly from three sources: the Beeb, CNN, and an NPR affiliate station. (And also from CNAV itself.) Julian Assange, in 2006, founded Wikileaks, which advertises itself as a library of “censored or otherwise restricted official materials.” These are no ordinary materials, but all have to do with “war, spying and corruption.” According to their “What is” page, they make every effort to authenticate any document they receive or hear about. In an interview with Der Spiegel, Julian Assange said this of his creation: WikiLeaks is a giant library of the world's most persecuted documents. We give asylum to these documents, we analyze them, we promote them and we obtain more. The case at hand involves the infamous Bradley Manning – who since opted for surgical and hormonal “transition” and now goes by the name Chelsea Manning. Manning served as an Army intelligence analyst. In that capacity Manning handled many classified communications and other documents relating to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2010 Manning stole a large trove of these documents and furnished them to Wikileaks. They, after authenticating them, released them to the public. The charges against Julian Assange specify that he: 1. Helped Manning crack the password to gain unauthorized access in order to obtain the material, and 2. Published material he knew was classified, and in so doing, put lives at risk. An equal-opportunity gadfly Julian Assange seems to be no respecter of persons or political affiliations. For though the official charges against him arise out of his publishing sensitive Iraq and Afghanistan material, his real problem stems from his publishing sensitive emails from Hillary Clinton’s bathroom server. Several conservative commentators – including some of CNAV’s contributors – have used this information to embarrass Hillary Clinton. Joan Swirsky and Paul Eidelberg both cited Wikileaks in connection with the Hillary Clinton emails. A source at the now-defunct Examiner.com site found a different document in connection with Operation Fast and Furious. In point of fact, the Justice Department has never charged Assange with anything relating to the Hillary emails. Nor have they charged him in connection with revelations about any government program other than the Iraq/Afghanistan War. But they still want to charge him for how he got those Iraq and Afghanistan documents. In the latest charge, they allege that he recruited hackers from groups such as Anonymous, LulzSec and Gnosis to launch cyberattacks against government agencies, cybersecurity firms and other entities, hoping to compromise internal databases and gather sensitive documents. In fact Julian Assange faces 18 different charges. But those charges do not include accessory to murder, or anything relating to the death of a U.S. intelligence source. They allege that he risked other people’s lives, but do not so far allege that he cost lives. Truth is a complete defense… Your editor remembers the drama surrounding the first Wikileaks publication. At first he was inclined to believe the government’s case. A nation-state must keep some things secret, because revealing those secrets can get people killed. Furthermore, Bradley/Chelsea Manning does not impress anyone as a hero(ine), but as an opportunist. Aside from that, Julian Assange strikes one as an anarchist. The site Hollowverse confirms that he gives that impression universally. He also is an atheist. But then your editor waited for the reports of the first recovery of a body, perhaps bound hand and foot, and throat cut. And waited. And waited. And is still waiting. Meanwhile, the revelations all turned out to be things Americans had a right to know, and are worth knowing. His entry in Conservapedia perhaps gives the most honest and balanced account about him. Assange was a hero of the American left when he published documents which discredited the Bush administration and aided the election of Barack Obama, but became a villain after the murder of Seth Rich. Assange published documents about the Obama administration's lies in the Benghazi massacre and exposed the Hillary Clinton email scandal. The American left then called him a tool of Russia. Julian Assange is a worse enemy of the Democrats He also figures in Special Counsel John Durham’s investigation: U.S. Attorney John Durham investigated Brennan, Clapper, Comey, and Strzok's motives. All of the downstream claims about Russian activity, including the Russian indictments promoted by Rosenstein and the Mueller team, are centered around origination claims of illicit Russian activity outlined in the ICA. This is exactly why actors within the DOJ, FBI and Intelligence Community needed to throw a bag over Julian Assange. For these and other reasons, Donald J. Trump could and should have vacated the charges against Julian Assange. He then could bring him to this country as a material witness against Hillary Clinton and other Deep State players. His failure to do so is part of Trump’s larger lack of imagination into how deep the corruption goes, and who can bear effective witness to it. Today, Julian Assange, in the opinion of CNAV, has every reason to fear for his life. Material witnesses to corruption do not survive long in American prisons today. Jeffrey Epstein did not. (That Ghislaine Maxwell, his former associate, still survives, surprises CNAV.) If his appeal fails – or perhaps even before the time expires – then the next we hear of Julian Assange is likely to read that he hanged himself in his cell.
